Comparison of UConn's IB/M and TCPCG Programs

Agriculture Education (AgEd) at the University of Connecticut is offered through a partnership between the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AgNR) and the Neag School of Education (NSoE). Students select a disciplined-based undergraduate major in the AgNR and complete education courses and certification requirements in the NSoE. UConn has two programs available for students preparing for a teaching career.

Degrees and Certification to Teach Agricultural Education

Application Year

High School Senior

(or adult applicants)

High School students/graduates submit the University of Connecticut undergraduate admissions application to enter the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AgNR).  Applicants select their preferred agricultural major (click here to view listing of AgNR majors). Potential AgEd students start as an AgNR major to build a strong subject knowledge base before entering a teacher education program. Programs in the Neag School of Education (NSoE) are only offered at the junior/senior and graduate levels.

Year 1

Undergraduate

Students are enrolled in the AgNR and take general education courses, courses for their major, and prerequisites for Education/ Teacher Certification programs.

Year 2

Undergraduate

Students are enrolled in the AgNR – continuing with general education courses, courses for the major, and prerequisites for Education/Teacher Certification programs.

Students considering the Integrated Bachelors/Masters (IB/M) program in AgEd submit applications to enter NSoE no later than January 15.

Year 3

Undergraduate

Students admitted into the IB/M Program in Agriculture Education will enroll in the NSoE. The AgEd degree is awarded by NSoE. Students may choose the Additional Degree option and complete extra credits in order to earn two B.S. degrees – one in their discipline from AgNR and one in AgEd from NSoE.

Students who plan to enter the TCPCG program after undergraduate degree completion will continue as AgNR students – taking courses for the major and other courses to prepare for the teaching profession.

Year 4

Undergraduate

Students earn their BS degree in Agricultural Education from NSoE at the end of the 4th year (and a content area degree in AgNR if they completed the extra credits and requirements for the additional degree program).

During the fall of their senior year in AgNR, students submit a UConn Graduate School application by December 1 to apply to the TCPCG. At the end of the 4th year, graduates earn their B.S. degree in the AgNR major they have completed.

Year 5

Graduate

Students complete graduate level courses and requirements. Graduates earn their Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Education from UConn and their Initial Educator Teaching Certificate from the Connecticut State Department of Education.

Students admitted to the TCPCG will start classes in May immediately following graduation. They complete a full-time, 12 month program to qualify for a Master of Arts degree in Education from UConn and their Initial Educator Teaching Certificate from the Connecticut State Department of Education.
